Position Overview: Develop data products within assigned platforms, working on all phases of development independently. This includes the participating in the requirements definition, analysis, planning, selection, blueprint, design, development and implementation of business intelligence reporting & analytic solutions.

Job Description:
Major Job Functions:
  • Partners with the business, including business analysts to create, review, or implement business requirements
  • Creates and maintains BI/DW ETL specifications and process documentation to produce the required data deliverables (data profiling, source to target maps, ETL flows)
  • Design, develop, test, and deliver data warehouse solutions
  • Perform Conceptual, Logical, Physical, Multidimensional, & Hierarchical data modeling
  • Develop and maintain Extract, Transform, and Load processes across multiple data sources
  • Identify data discrepancies and data quality issues and work to ensure data consistency and integrity
  • Monitor system details within the data warehouse including stored procedures and execution time and implements efficiency improvements
  • Research industry standard development practices, new technologies and advances in the areas of business intelligence
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement/refinement of processes, tools, quality metrics, methodologies and standards
  • Performs other duties as required
  • Effectively brokers a shared understanding on business issues, and agreement on the best solution given the business unit's need and the company's strategic goals
  • Ensure reporting of progress and escalation of issues, based on guidelines established for workgroup or project and presentation of information is professional, timely and accurate
  • Ensures that work completed within scope satisfies the business and /or functional requirements provided and fits appropriately within Finning's preferred solutions architecture
  • Ensures that systems and changes implemented within scope do not expose Finning to unknown corporate risk
  • Ensures that code within scope is properly managed and base lined between local workstation and development environments
  • Create and maintain BI/DW ETL specifications and process documentation
  • Produces specification documentation that is of excellent quality, which is easily understood by the reviewers, approvers, and users of the material
  • Responsible for compliance with Finning's change-control processes related to the systems development life cycle

  • Knowledge of data warehouse, data mart and database technologies, standards, and methodologies
  • Good understanding of database and data warehouse design theory (logical and physical)
  • Good understanding of DW processes and OLAP concepts, with star schema data models
  • Good understanding of ETL design and theory
  • Knowledge of the Microsoft BI stack (SQL Server, SSIS, SSRS and SSAS)
  • Infor Business Performance Warehouse (BPW) experience an asset
  • Knowledge and experience with a range of other databases (Oracle, DB2)
  • Knowledge of Application Lifecycle Management Tools (ALM) used in tracking and monitoring the development lifecycle, such as TFS
  • Knowledge of integrating BI with Microsoft SharePoint 2010/2013
  • Knowledge of agile practices and methodologies
  • Knowledge of data lifecycle and industry standards
  • Experience with development for BI & analytic tools such as Tableau, SAP BusinessObjects, Cognos
  • Understands and adheres to Finning policies and procedures, including safety

Education & Experience:
  • CBIP certificate/TDWI education; degree/diploma in computer science or a technology-related field, or equivalent proven work- or education-related experience
  • Strong requirements gathering, decision making, project management, problem solving, and investigative skills
  • Full life cycle experience (requirements gathering through production deployment) in all aspects of BI/DW (ETL, data modeling, analytics and reporting)
  • 3 - 5 years of experience designing and developing complex database solutions using ETL tools
  • 3+ years of experience with the Microsoft Business Intelligence stack including Analysis Services, Integration Services, and Reporting Services
  • Experience in statistical analysis and data mining
  • Expertise in working closely with business and IT stakeholders to define problems and design large-scale, enterprise class solutions in a leadership role
  • Location can be either Edmonton or Calgary
