Job Description & Responsibilities

We are seeking a Lead Quality Control Supervisor to join our team in Calgary. In this role, this position will provide supervision for the inspection and testing activities for the pipe mill. This position will interact with the operations department on a daily basis to ensure that a high quality product is produced as efficiently and safely as possible. A part of the job will be to interact with mill personnel at all levels, but primary interactions will be with shop floor subordinates and mid-level management. This person will be involved in team-oriented problem solving efforts as opportunities present themselves. This position reports to the Quality Assurance Manager.

  • Perform daily process and product audits (first piece validation, shift change, process upsets etc..) to ensure conformance with documented work procedures and document the audit results
  • Responsible for Gauge Calibration, gauge control/maintenance and creation of Micro Schedules on an ongoing basis
  • Provide vacation coverage for Lab personnel, Lab Supervisor and Quality Engineer
  • Train and Mentor the new QCS and Lab Techs on Quality activities and also train the new operators from shop floor on critical areas such as threading and use of gauges
  • Work with QMS team to develop/improve written inspection procedures, as needed. Provide training to the shop floor personnel related to any procedure changes that impacts inspection. As required, participate in TPG internal and external audit functions.
  • Monitor audit trends specific to the manufacturing lines and communicate issues to QA and Operations. Specify improvement opportunities.
  • Provide dispositions for coil (Apply & Test, etc), in-process pipe or finished pipe product on quality hold
  • Provide technical assistance for shop floor quality issues relating to bare pipe manufacturing or coating application. Provide assistance "bracketing" pipe during process upsets
  • Inspect product returns associated with product claims
  • Work with quality management to develop/improve written inspection procedures, as needed
  • Develop recommendations concerning reactions to problems with inspection data and work with the operating department to limit the manufacturing of non-compliant product
  • Participate, as needed, in quality improvement projects including following trials, analyzing results, collecting shop floor data, etc.
  • Provide leadership in developing and maintaining safe work operating and inspection practices
  • Liaise with QA Management to manage incoming inspection issues and field investigation issues
  • Participate in the development of training literature for quality inspectors
  • Complete any other specific tasks assigned to you by your Supervisor/Manager


Requirements

  • years of experience in QA or operations within an industrial manufacturing environment
  • University Engineering degree in Metallurgical/Materials or Mechanical disciplines (preferred)
  • Knowledge of metals based manufacturing processes, including mechanical, metallurgical and Chemical testing procedures an asset
  • Academic training in metallography, metallurgy, heat treating, or NDT an asset.
  • Knowledge of ASTM and API testing requirements is preferred.
  • Must understand API 5CT / API Q1 quality standards and Quality Management Systems (QMS). Knowledge of quality control planning for new products is a plus.
  • Experience working with interdepartmental teams at all levels of management to accomplish goals
  • Mechanical aptitude, good manual dexterity and good hand eye coordination
  • Proficient in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook; ability to learn other software applications
  • Strong interpersonal skills; ability to interact with individuals at various levels within the organization
  • Attention to detail
  • Excellent communication skills, ability to effectively present project results to management team
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize responsibilities and work independently with minimal supervision
  • Strong attention to detail, close observation and concentration skills
