Position Overview: Under the direction of the Associate General Counsel, Finning Canada, this position will provide legal services to Finning Canada, its affiliates, subsidiaries and related entities. This position will also be responsible for day to day leadership, coaching and mentoring and supporting growth and development opportunities.

Job Description:

Major Job Functions:
  • Assist with general contract work including reviewing, drafting and negotiating contracts for sales rentals, services, and suppliers;
  • Assist with employment law matters including employment contracts; employee discipline and dismissal; workplace investigations; employment standards complaints; human rights complaints, workplace accommodation; and workplace policies;
  • Assist with leasing and facilities matters;
  • Assist in managing general litigation, including wrongful dismissal claims, debt collection, and insurance claims;
  • Other legal work as delegated from time to time
  • Strictly adhere to all company policies and procedures
  • Being proactive and objective in meeting and managing the organization's legal requirements
  • Providing legally sound and practical advice
  • Ensuring that legal files are maintained and accessible
  • Represent the company in an ethical and professional manner
  • Maintain and enhance the reputation of Finning Legal and the company in the community
  • Ensure status of all legal matters and any costs or risks are reported accurately to senior management in a timely manner
  • Perform duties with the utmost professionalism and highest ethical standards at all times

  • Strong knowledge of legislation, jurisprudence and case law, in particular contract law and commercial law
  • Proven experience as legal counsel in a business environment
  • Demonstrated ability to create legally defensive or proactive strategies


Education & Experience:
  • Law degree from a recognized institution and membership in good standing with the Law Society of Alberta
  • 3 to 6 years (post-call) of experience in private practice preferably with a national or strong regional firm focused on business law, or in-house setting in a comparable business or that involves sophisticated contracts or commercial transactions
