About the OpportunityRDN has exciting opportunities for full-time Mechanic, Transportation Services roles, based in Nanaimo, BC. The shift schedule, subject to change based on operational needs, is 1:30 PM to 12:00 AM, Tuesday to Saturday.
In this position, you will be primarily responsible for conducting preventative maintenance, inspections, and repairs on the RDN fleet vehicles and equipment.
Reporting to the Superintendent, you will play a pivotal role in maintaining the RDN fleet by performing inspections, repairs, and diagnostics to ensure smooth transit operations.
Your responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Performing preventative maintenance, safety inspections, and commercial vehicle inspections
- Diagnosing and repairing vehicles and equipment, including roadside repairs
- Maintaining records and schedules for servicing and repairs
- Supporting inventory management by notifying the Parts & Services Coordinator or Chief Mechanic of low stock items
- Training new staff on mechanical aspects of buses and equipment
- Winterizing tools and machinery, including snow removal and towing equipment
- Welding, fabricating, and performing building maintenance and repairs
- Performing general building maintenance and ensuring adherence to safety standards in the shop

More About YouTo qualify for this role, you must hold a Heavy-Duty, Truck and Transport, or Automotive (with a BCIT Air Brakes for Mechanics course - CTMX 010 or an equivalent BC course) Mechanics Red Seal certification, with 3+ years of relevant work experience. An equivalent mix of education and experience will be considered.
The following are also required:
- A high school diploma, or equivalent
- Authorized Inspector (AI) Certificate or ability to obtain one within the first 90 days of employment
- Must have a valid ICBC Class 5 BC Driver’s License with an Air Brake Endorsement
- Ability to undergo a criminal record check with vulnerable sector clearance
The following skills and experience will be strong assets:
- Hold an Occupational First Aid Level 1 certificate (asset)
- Proficient in computer systems, including Microsoft Suite, for accessing CVIP, managing work orders, and understanding equipment schematics within Preventative Maintenance Programs
- Comprehensive understanding of WHMIS and CVSE regulations and procedures
- Knowledge of the safe and proper operation of equipment and work procedures
- Proven knowledge of automated start systems, hydraulics, engines, electrical and air conditioning systems, air brakes, electric drive motors, and mobile equipment
- Flexibility to work a shift pattern
