Position Overview: The Occupational Health Nurse will be responsible for promoting employee health, preventing disease and injury, providing first aid and nursing care when required, liaising with OEM's medical director, managing injuries and claims, training and engaging employees in health and safety programs, health surveillance and providing expert counsel on disability management.

Job Description:

Major Job Functions:
  • Provide emergency care as needed in the workplace and arrange for further care if necessary
  • Lead OEM's First Aid and Advanced First Aider programs including training and supporting operations to ensure adequate coverage
  • Effectively manage all injured workers and WCB claims
  • Liaise with WCB as chief person in charge of claims management
  • Conduct health surveillance including audiometric testing, pulmonary function tests, vision screening, and fit testing
  • Provide health counseling, and medical and psychological referral services for employees
  • Work with others in the organization to plan, implement and evaluate employee wellness programs (i.e. Immunization programs, safety training, fitness programs)
  • Promote compliance with legislation and regulations related to health and safety and workers' compensation
  • Conduct fitness to work and other examinations
  • Facilitate disability case management in conjunction with Human Resources by coordinating health care and early intervention to promote the safe and timely return to work of ill or injured employees
  • Assess work environments to identify health and safety hazards and recommend control measures, or work with an occupational health and safety team to keep work environments as safe as possible
  • Collect and assess data (i.e. Incidents of illness, injury) to identify trends and evaluate the effectiveness of safety or wellness programs
  • Prepare incident reports and maintain records
  • Maintain confidential employee health records
  • Design and lead health safety and wellness training programs
  • Treat non-occupational injuries and minor illnesses
  • Conduct testing or screening programs (i.e. Audiometric testing, pulmonary function testing, ergonomic evaluations, drug testing, blood pressure screening)
  • Assess potential employees' fitness to perform particular jobs
  • Training employees
  • Supporting health, safety and environment programs


Specific Skills & Knowledge:
  • Familiarity with computer software used for data management, presentations, communications or medical testing
  • Problem solving and critical thinking abilities
  • Risk-based approach taken to prioritization of issues
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Sound organizational skills
  • Good judgment and the ability to make decisions quickly, especially in stressful situations

  • Interpersonal and negotiation skills required to settle disputes
  • Excellent working knowledge of excel, word, and power point
  • Enjoy working with and consulting others, systematically compiling information for records, operating medical equipment, and caring for ill and injured employees


Education & Experience:
  • Minimum of five years of nursing experience
  • Instructor certification to teach first aid, audiometric certification, advanced cardiac life support certification considered assets.

  • Acceptable Criminal Record & Background Check
  • This position is a weekend shift position, Friday-Sunday (6am-6:30pm) and statutory holidays.
  • Shift work options may exist for day shift (5am-4pm) and night shift (4pm-2:30am). Times are subject to change based on operational needs
