The Opportunity:

You will be part of our growing team, to work with a team of close-knit, like-minded, occupational hygienist, hazardous materials professionals, safety professionals, and technologists. Using your skills as an occupational hygiene technician to complete on-site assessments and monitoring. As a consultant, you will be providing occupational hygiene support to a variety of public and private clients. As the newest occupational hygiene technician, you will be working under the supervision of other experienced technicians, project managers and senior practitioner team members, with the opportunity to rapidly assume increasing autonomy and responsibility. WSP provides mentoring of all staff, all required safety and technical training courses, on the job shadowing, and training to maximize your learning opportunity.

What you can expect to do here:

You will have the opportunity to grow your career as a professional technician by:
  • Applying your technical knowledge of methods, regulations, equipment, tools, systems, controls, and procedures.
  • Make routine and non-routine decisions with guidance and with latitude of your supervising Project Manager.
  • Work on a wide variety of assignments, scope of work and complexity.
  • Providing project technical support and services, including:
    o Preparing and calibrating sampling equipment for field use,
    o Identifying site issues or project concerns and recommending corrective actions
  • Providing occupational hygiene services, including:
    o Conducting site assessments for asbestos, mold, lead, PCB's, etc.
    o Sample collection in the field, data interpretation, and preparation of reports.
    o Interpreting and/or analyzing sample/data results in relation to legislative requirements and industry-accepted guidelines and criteria.
    o Supervising asbestos abatement activities.
  • Conducting air quality assessments, including indoor air and occupational hygiene (i.e., IAQ, welding fume, noise)
  • Basic client liaison to ensure health, safety, and occupational hygiene needs are addressed.
  • Participate in the Health and Safety program.
  • Participate in the Quality Control program.
  • Engaging in technical training programs,
  • Flexibility in meeting client schedules - evening, night, and weekend work may be required
  • This position is approximately 90% field work, and 10% office-based with travel across Alberta and across Western and Northern Canada (for extended periods of time) with paid over-time as required.
  • You'll be using your expertise to complete field surveys, write technical reports, collaborate with our many counterparts in all our different disciplines at WSP and provide expertise and client deliverables on projects.
  • All other duties as required.

What you'll bring to WSP:
  • Occupational Hygiene technician certificate, diploma from a chemical or environment programs or equivalent education such as technical, trade or college, and a Bachelor of Science (or similar) also acceptable.
  • Eligible for membership in a professional organization is an asset but not a requirement.
  • All levels of experience in Occupational Hygiene, hazardous material assessments (e.g., asbestos-related issues, lead, silica dust, etc.), is considered an asset.
  • Experience working with a hazardous materials abatement contractor is an asset but not a requirement.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication and you know your way around the MS Office suite of products.
  • Must possess a valid Class 5 driver's licence with no restrictions and access to a reliable vehicle, with appropriate registration and insurance.
  • Requirement to wear personal protective equipment (i.e., respiratory protection, hard hat, high-visibility vests, fire retardant coveralls, safety boots, and safety glasses).
  • A desire to broaden range of professional skills, adaptable, while managing a busy workload with proven problem-solving skills.
  • Enthusiastic and versatile, willing to take on responsibility.
