Whati is a fly in community set on the magnificent Lac La Marte, one of the largest lakes in the Northwest Territories. We're also situated along the North American north/south bird migration routes; every spring and fall we're lucky enough to witness the breathtaking spectacle of the area's marshes hosting thousands of ducks, geese, and other migratory species that gather here to feed. 

In 2010 the NWT Bureau of statistics reported the community population to be 497. Community members actively participate in traditional activities including hunting, fishing, trapping, and arts and crafts.

Your New Role

The Community of Whati has an exciting opportunity for a Public Works Superintendent to join our team in Whati, NWT.  

Reporting to the Senior Administrative Officer you will supervise and oversee the operations and maintenance of the Public Works including roads, water, storm and sanitary sewers, solid waste collection, and vehicle maintenance. 

More specifically your responsibilities will include:

  • Managing water, wastewater, and solid waste systems in order to ensure that the residents of Whati are afforded the quality service and supply as determined by the terms and conditions of licensing and regulations under agreement by the Community Government of Whati. 
  • Performing regular inspections of roads and drainage systems, arranging for maintenance as required. 
  • Supervising and monitoring the local road maintenance program and the dust suppression program. 
  • Conducting regular inspections of Community Government of Whati buildings to ensure staff and public safety. 
  • Supervising, training, and leading Municipal Services Staff in order to ensure a positive and healthy work environment.
  • Maintaining the general administration of the Public Works Department.

In order to apply for this role, you will need previous experience in Public Works combined with strong management skills and a valid drivers license. Experience working with northern communities or working in a small community is a significant asset. 

Our ideal candidate will have previous experience working within an aboriginal community along with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of stakeholders. Similarly, strong communication skills and problem-solving skills are essential.
