Description

This role is focused on helping us optimize for cost, automating away repeatable tasks and creating cost awareness and visibility within teams without ever risking reliability or customer experience

Requirements:
  • Identifying and addressing repeatable patterns in wastage by:
  • Building and contributing to automated tooling to remove/mitigate waste (e.g. automatic deletion of untagged instances, automatic deletion of ELBs not connected to anything, Glacier lifecycle policies, better use of staging to meet functional needs whilst minimizing costs)
  • Building and re-using automation to make teams aware of potential wastage
  • Contributing to the development of the FinOps roadmap and product backlog, and comfortable with solution design and architecture
  • Tagging coverage, enhancing automation and types of tags to increase our insights into where we spend on the cloud, enabling better decisions and increasing cost allocation to our different platforms
  • Enhancing the use of Cloudability e.g. dashboard enhancements, building automation integrated with the Cloudability API, synchronization of our metadata
  • Integrating cost into our other tooling (e.g. delivery pipeline, 'ScoreCard', our internal tool we use to gamify engineering best practice)
  • Monitoring and investigating bill anomalies providing remediation and recommendations
  • Working with AWS and GCP to drive efficiency
  • Owning the evaluation of 3rd party cost optimization tools
  • Onboarding of new instances; initial technical assessment followed by creating awareness and guidance e.g. changes in architecture, what teams should be aware of, any changes needed in alerting etc
  • Assessing new vs current tech for cost-saving purposes e.g. DynamoOnDemand vs DynamoDB (reserved) costs, how we could use SPOT
  • Influencing teams on where and how to act to be cost-efficient, as well as making it easier for teams to adopt improvements
  • Implementing major cost savings changes that can be pulled on should 'additional' savings need to be made (e.g. consolidating regions to enhance RI savings, RDS consolidation etc)

Requirements:
  • Understanding and/or experience with cost tooling (Cloud Custodian, native AWS cost tooling and Cloudability)
  • Engineering for the cloud (ideally AWS)
  • Experience of contributing to other teams code
  • Self-starter, whether that's coming up with new ideas, discovering organizational and technical knowledge, or improving existing processes and solutions
  • Experienced in automation scripting, including Python and shell / PowerShell
  • Understanding of Object-Oriented programming languages such as C# or Java would be beneficial
  • Experience of Configuration Management tools such as Ansible, Terraform, Puppet or Chef
  • Strong passion to automate away manual tasks
