Position Overview:

Tier 3, escalated level support of complex facilities infrastructure-related (i.e. AC, DC power and HVAC) projects, and preventative maintenance activities in top critical communications sites (i.e. central offices and data centres)

    •Tier 3, escalated level support of complex facilities infrastructure-related (i.e. AC, DC power and HVAC) projects, and preventative maintenance activities in top critical communications sites (i.e. central offices and data centres)
    •Ensure risk mitigation plans in place for all major power and HVAC related work - lead development of the plans as required and coordinate impacted stakeholder reviews/approvals
    •Review and contribute to power/HVAC design reviews and MOP development
    •Escalated point of contact for complex power/HVAC-related failures, issues, or outages, and all site emergencies:
      •Contain the problem to minimize impacts, and mitigate further issues
      •Triage the problem and engage the right internal/external experts to resolve
      •Develop recovery plans post emergency situation
      •Lead situational analyses to assist with root cause investigations and post-incident reviews
      •Participate in permanent/long-term solution development


Required Knowledge:
    •Knowledge of High Voltage AC Power Utility building entrance switchgear
    •Advanced knowledge of AC Power in-building distribution switchgear - related experience in a telecom/communications/data centre environment considered a strong asset
    •Basic understanding of transfer schemes and knowledge of procedures related to transferring a building to/from commercial utility and standby generator power
    •Knowledge of operational philosophy of back up generation systems including standby generators, UPS systems, and basic understanding of DC power rectifier systems
    •Basic operational understanding of both diesel and turbine generators
    •Knowledge of building distribution AC power riser layouts and relationship to associated switchgear, and functional operational understanding of same
    •Ability to read and fully understand Electrical Drawings
    •Ability to analyze a critical site and work with TELUS Planners, Master Electricians, Electrical Engineers to identify and develop post disaster recovery plans
    •Project management fundamentals - particularly applied to capital project life-cycles
    •Strong assets:
      •End-to-end delivery experience with facilities infrastructure projects/programs (i.e. AC/DC power, space, HVAC) - planning, design, builds
      •Working knowledge of, or experience in telecom/communications sites - traditional CO/MSO (central office) and/or IDC (data centre)

Required Skills & Abilities:
    •Demonstrated strong leadership in high-stress crisis situations - takes full command of the situation and able to maintain calm and pragmatic approach to lead issue containment, triage and resolution
    •Ability to think quickly and creatively on their feet
    •Demonstrated ability to lead without direct authority
    •Team player in all situations yet capable of assuming leadership under all circumstances
    •Strong electrical background with ability to read and analyze critical site information quickly and accurately, under failure and emergency scenarios
    •Strong situational analysis related to developing and implementing recovery plans on short notice
    •Must be able to read and interpret single line drawings for both Power and HVAC, in a Telecom, Communications or 24/7 Mission Critical facility
    •Project management skills directly related to installation and/or retrofit scenarios in a telecom/communications environment
    •Clear and articulate communicator - capable of delivering concise directions and instructions during stressed emergency situations
    •Comfortable and effective communicating with all levels of management, including SVP/EVP
    •Comfortable and confident in working with power and HVAC trades and contractors
    •Strong interpersonal skills with ability to negotiate with others and deal with a variety of contacts, both internal and external to the organization diversification within the team
    •Ability to work under minimal supervision
    •Open-minded, creative and innovative
    •Passionate with a can-do attitude

Required Professional Designation/Certification:
    •Licensed Professional Engineer (or eligible) preferred - CET certification with extensive related AC power experience will be considered
    •Project management or equivalent certification related directly to large commercial AC power installations and retrofits in mission critical site environments

Required Experience:
    •5-10 years of experience in Telecom/Communications field, working directly on AC power systems, with basic knowledge of operation & installation of Commercial HVAC and DC power systems (i.e. equipment and distribution)
    •Experience working and communicating directly with power and HVAC trades - strong/robust trade networks considered an asset
    •Demonstrated experience working with teams and individuals in a matrix organization
    •Considered strong assets:
      •Hands-on, end-to-end experience with design, build and commissioning of AC power systems
      •Experience with leading/managing operations & maintenance of AC power systems
      •Hands-on experience leading containment and recovery of power equipment or system failures and outages in a live-traffic environment
