ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

Methanex is currently seeking a qualified Senior Project Manager - Facilities Risk Management to join our team in Medicine Hat, Alberta. This is a temporary position with a commencement date of March 2020 and a duration of approximately 3 years through to March 2023. 

As our new Senior Project Manager - Facilities Risk Management, you will lead, direct, and coordinate all activities associated with the conceptual design, engineering, construction, and handover of one (or multiple) occupied buildings per Methanex blast mitigation standards. This will include representing the company with stakeholders (city, site management, and consultants) on topics related to project development and approval through the various approval stages and gates. 

More specifically your responsibilities in this role will include:

  • Developing a realistic high-level plan for the safe and successful completion of the assigned project (control room, water treatment, lab, technical building, maintenance, warehouse, and admin building) as well as preparing a project charter. 
  • Evaluating project risks and recommending a phasing approach to effectively mitigate the specific risk associated with the blast impact on our site. 
  • Using a stage/gate approach in conjunction with the Management of Change site process to progress the project through from development to closeout.
  • Developing a risk register for the project and proactively managing mitigation plans. 
  • Identifying, soliciting, and leading the appropriate cross-functional resources (both internal and external) that are needed for the project team.
  • Developing and refining the appropriate class of cost estimates and project schedule based on the project phase. 
  • Identifying and scheduling regular meetings and communications to key stakeholders appropriate for the project phase. 
  • Ensuring that the building design is 'fit for purpose' based on Methanex corporate requirements on blast mitigation and Responsible Care. 
  • Identifying end-user needs and ensuring that all key requirements are included in the specifications. 
  • Identifying and ensuring that all local regulatory and legal requirements are met. 
  • Ensuring that the design can be executed with the facility online. 
  • Leading the selection process for the engineering company to develop the project as well as the contractors that will execute it. Developing a Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) to present this strategy. 
  • Ensuring that all safety protocols are adhered to by project staff. 
  • Developing project execution plans covering all elements associated with capital projects. 
  • Managing the quality assurance program. 
  • Managing budget and financial reporting updates as identified in the project plan complete with recommendations that ensure the project remains on budget. 
  • Contributing to the organizational vision of Global Methanol Leadership and as a team member demonstrating the core values of integrity, trust, respect, and professionalism. 
  • Undertaking all aspects of the role through living the Methanex values.

In order to qualify for this role, you will need an undergraduate degree in Architecture, Engineering, or Construction Management along with a minimum of 10 years of experience in building construction management with a sound safety record. You'll also possess the following:

  • Experience utilizing a stage (or phase) gate review process in project management. 
  • Experience with blast-resistant design and the construction of buildings for Oil & Gas and Petrochemical facilities. 
  • In-Depth knowledge of construction cost estimating, scheduling, procurement, accounting, and engineering principles (primarily civil engineering).
  • Demonstrated ability to understand and interpret contracts/legal documents and make appropriate recommendations (with a preference for Canadian/Alberta codes and standards) 
  • Proficiency with applicable computer applications including Microsoft Office.
  • Project Management certification ie PMP (asset).
  • Certified Construction Management ie CCM (asset).

You'll also possess a superior ability to quickly identify and directly address issues as well as independently respond to highly complex matters in a professional manner with guidance required in only the most unique and complicated issues. With excellent time management and prioritization skills, you will have the ability to consistently meet identified goals and achieve results. Of course, you will also join Methanex with a flexible mindset and the ability to manage ambiguity while responding to many shifting responsibilities.
