Position Overview: Working directly with Technical Services and Production personnel, the successful candidate will be responsible for root cause determination of failures in Powertrain components, including documentation of components during disassembly and the generation of technical Failure Analysis reports. In addition to root cause analysis, the Technical Lead will support continuous improvement projects for both Caterpillar equipment and OEM processes.

Job Description:

Major Job Functions:
  • Through the Failure Analysis process, determine root cause of component failure
  • Prepare technical reports supporting root cause determination
  • Identify and report part and product problems to Caterpillar, through the OEM technical report process, that then may initiate product improvement efforts
  • Observing and documenting with digital photos and written text, component condition upon disassembly, researching component history, analyzing individual piece parts and relating this information to the function and operation of the components
  • Preserve, secure and store warranty parts to support warranty claims
  • Preserve, secure and store "Watch Item" parts for furtherance to Caterpillar
  • Assume responsibility for the categorization of parts to determine where financial costing will reside
  • Establish and maintain a strong working relationship with Production personnel and Customer Service personnel
  • Continually work to identify daily working process issues related to the failure analysis process and drive improvements
  • When required, assist in the development of technical documentation that supports the OEM remanufacturing processes
  • Carry out the OEM portion of product tests as instructed and secure test iron for analysis from completed tests
  • Perform all tasks in a safe manner including FLHA, safety observations, other safety input

Specific Skills & Knowledge:
  • Strong technical knowledge of Large diesel engines/Powertrain components & systems, including torque converters, transmissions, differentials, wheel groups, planetary final drives and brakes as relating to Caterpillar equipment
  • Strong root cause analysis skills
  • Extremely high level of attention to detail
  • The ability to effectively communicate technical findings in writing and verbally
  • Ability to clearly communicate work instructions to production personnel in order to document and preserve evidence of failure
  • Fully conversant with Microsoft Office environment. (Word, Excel)
  • Familiar with a mid-scale ERP environment
  • Familiar with ISO Quality Assurance Programs
  • Able to work within a team environment
  • The ability to work safely, lead by example, and to contribute to overall company safety

Education & Experience:
  • Preferred candidates will have an Engineering degree in related discipline (mechanical, metallurgical, reliability) or be Mechanical Engineering Technologists or Heavy Duty Mechanics
  • 2-3 years of relevant working experience in Failure Analysis, Reliability or Heavy Duty Equipment repair or production.

  • This position requires coverage on early/evening and weekend shifts. We cover the Production hours which encompass 5AM to 2:30AM Monday to Thursday (2 shifts), weekends from 6AM to 630PM, as well as a regular office shift
