Fabric Administrator (Contractor Role)

Location:
Calgary Hybrid role - in the office Tues, Wed, Thursday)
Target Start Date: early January 2026
Contract Duration: 1 year (possible extension)

Reporting to the Manager, Data and Cloud Compute Services the Fabric Administrator is accountable for configuring, securing, monitoring, and governing Microsoft Fabric at the tenant level to enable reliable, compliant, and performant data operations across the company. The administrator will work closely with developers, infrastructure teams and the data team to implement solutions and services in Azure.

Accountabilities include:
    • Configure tenant-wide Fabric settings, workspace defaults, OneLake policies, and feature controls through the Fabric admin portal.
    • Provision, manage, and optimize capacity and resource allocations to support Data Engineering, Real-Time Analytics, and Power BI workloads.
    • Implement and maintain access controls and role assignments using Microsoft Entra ID and Fabric workspace roles to enforce least privilege and delegation models.
    • Define and apply governance controls including data sensitivity labels, data loss prevention rules, metadata scanning, and content certification workflows.
    • Monitor tenant usage, performance metrics, and system health through the admin monitoring workspace and take corrective actions for bottlenecks or outages.
    • Audit and review tenant activity logs and configuration changes to support security investigations, compliance reporting, and incident response.
    • Manage integrations and connectivity to external data sources and cloud services, and enable service principals, Azure DevOps integration, and multi-geo support as required.
    • Coordinate with platform teams (Cloud, Security, Data Engineering, BI) to onboard workspaces, enforce naming and lifecycle policies, and support migration or adoption projects.
    • Maintain documentation, runbooks, and operational playbooks for common admin tasks, capacity scaling, and escalation procedures.
    • Drive adoption, change management, and training for self-service users while governing platform access and capabilities.
    • Providing guidance and mentoring to development teams on DevOps principles and best practices
Education:
    • Degree in Computer Science, IT or related field, or a Diploma in IT Administration with equivalent work experience
      • Desired: Microsoft certifications in Azure, Power Platform, Power BI
      • Azure DevOps Certification
      • Experience with Microsoft Purview, OneLake
      • ITIL Foundation, or other Change and Release Management processes
Team & Environment
      • Team focuses on data & cloud compute: Fabric, Power BI Gov, Azure, data tools.
      • Part of the Cloud Solution Product team delivering technical, PM, BA, and IC support functions.
      • Hybrid environment; contractor will work closely with the team and SMEs.
Technical Requirements
      Mandatory: Fabric administration experience.
      • Experience with Azure Synapse (transferable), Admin 365, and broader Microsoft Data/365 ecosystem.
      • Understanding of governance and Entra ID (ID & access mgmt).
      • Able to work with data gateways and capacity management.
Core Responsibilities
      • Support early implementation of Fabric.
      • Set up and establish Fabric environments.
      • Move data from Oracle into Fabric.
      • Collaborate with project team, DBAs, and management.
      • Provide operational support as the platform transitions into steady state.
      • Identify challenges, coordinate with SMEs, and ensure smooth delivery.
